Seiko's are superb, but lack the status...my only other watch is an old Seiko series 5 stainless steel that I wear when renovating. I can put it on after 2 years, shake the wrist and it just starts up again....never serviced and owned it 25 years, bought second hand for £15.

Was out for a sunday drive today not dressed like a gipo so was wearing my black face seiko 5 with black leather strap I got from colareb. I didnt go down the one expensive route but have 19 watches now (yeah, sad I know) with max paid about 250 quid. Couple of display boxes for them so burglars will be disappointed when they find out they are only worth something to me!

Still looking for a decent timex marlin to bring it up to 20 but they went for stupid money during lockdown (didnt everything). Im after a particular type my granda owned in the 60s. Trying to get an original rather than an indian frankenwatch.

@DurhamBorn This thread had a lot of good info in it

Watches have become a real crowd puller and several auctioneers specialise in them, Silver Vaults, Gardner Houlgate, J Pye etc. Your best bet is to go to the-saleroom.com and put in the brand name you are after and pick a small auctioneer rather than one of the specialist outfits. As was mentioned earlier some brands are untouchable but others such as Zenith are still great value.

The Zenith El Primero movement is a classic and was used in the Rolex Daytona chronograph. The story of the movement is legendary within watch circles. An engineer called Charles Vermot pleaded with the American parent company not to scrap the dies, tools, cams, drawings and machines at the time of the Quartz crisis. Vermot was in charge of production so he and his brother-in-law moved all the relevant machines and manuals to an unused attic in the factory and bricked up the door. Several years later when mechanical movements were saleable once more and, following the sale of the business by the American conglomerate, Vermot's plan was realised and the El Primero went back into production.

I love this story and suspect that it will appeal to many of the contributors to this board.

Good luck with your hunt. Ignore the guide prices which are set to encourage false hope.

A fantastic movement and yes it’s a great story- would add- its a movement that essentially saved Rolex when putting the Daytona into production after the quartz crisis

Escobar: Bilderberg Does China, Realizes "The Chessboard Sucks" | ZeroHedge

No wonder Davos and Bilderberg messenger boys, when they look at The Grand Chessboard, are filled with dread: their era of perpetual free lunch is over. What would delight cynics, skeptics, neoplatonists and Taoists galore is that it was Davos-Bilderberg Men (and Women) who actually boxed themselves into zugzwang.

All dressed up – with nowhere to go. Even JP Morgan’s Jamie Dimon – who didn’t even bother to go to Bilderberg – is scared, saying an economic “hurricane” is coming. And overturning the chessboard is no remedy: at best that may invite a ceremonious tuxedo visit by Mr. Sarmat and Mr. Zircon carrying some hypersonic bubbly.

Don't buy a copy watch, no need. So many swiss automatics out there you can get a low status (ie not a Patek, Rolex etc) for great value.

I read 'A man and his Watch' and the story about Charles Vermot from ZIRP above is in there. Its a fab book and tells the stories about men (manly stories) and the connection to a watch.....whether that is the famous Paul Newman Rolex Daytona that he wore everyday for 35 years....or the prise possession of an old (but worthless) watch worn and treasured by a grandparent but then effortlessly handed over to a grandson. It includes G Shocks that have been dyed by accident in industrial dyes and battered watches found on the beach and restored but with all the patina remaining. Its fascinating.

I sold my old Breitling and I bought an Oris Aquis which is a chunky 43mm which I really liked. Second hand of course for £700 with all the papers and box and warranty because it was only 6 months old. £1900 new.

Oris is still a private company which was interesting and at the time its strap line was 'for the man for whom time is important, but not to the nearest second'. Which seemed a cool laid back approach because we all know no automatic is really as accurate as a £10 casio :). It Swiss automatic...great steel bracelet but I also have a rubber and leather band too. Been in the sea in Italy, Australia and Devon ....not worth enough to be stolen.

You didnt buy knock off jumpers.....so I wouldn't buy a knock off watch although they do look good. But that says to me that its more important what others think of your watch than what you do.

Seiko's are superb, but lack the status...my only other watch is an old Seiko series 5 stainless steel that I wear when renovating. I can put it on after 2 years, shake the wrist and it just starts up again....never serviced and owned it 25 years, bought second hand for £15.

Tissots can be really good value for a well made watch

The Omega highlighted is great. A Co-Axial Deville would be £3500 but one that looks similar could be £350. A watch enthusiast can tell the difference but for me its horses for courses.

So my advice is if you buy one watch buy a brilliant one, brilliant to you....not necessarily an expensive one. So that might even be understated, overstated, divers, gold etc etc. Something you like and is real.

I know someone who wears an old trench watch from WW1....its not worth much, not much to look at but it is a superb piece and a great history.

Enjoy

Exactly, and my numbers showed this was coming when there wasnt a sniff of it anywhere. The macro always drives things in the end, just the lead in from the liquidity side, then the lag.Iv spent over £600 in the last year on quality John Smedley jumpers, polos, cardigans etc,all 2nd hand on Ebay, mostly new never worn or immaculate £30ish for £140 items.Im still picking a few up.End of lockdown was great as lots of people bought then got fat so never wore and so sold.I am kitted out on them forever if i want, they never go out of fashion, looked after well mostly last forever, and you look the business.Iv done the same with quality leather low top trainers, every colour twice,trousers/chinos etc etc.I think it wont be much longer when this dries up as much higher demand 2nd hand and less people selling.

Iv even bought up 5 years supply of garden feed,3 years of vitamins etc, almost everything i use.

Only thing im after is a quality copy watch,i know Spunko knows the best site for these, but i wasnt sure how to go about it.

This resonates; the past two years I have invested in F&F (Tesco) brand men's 100% cashmere sweaters. I buy them in medium, large and x-large and depending on the ambient temp stack them on my body 1-2-3 (we only heat one room in a cold stone house.) They are as weightless as t-shirts and one hundred times as warm.

Best time to buy is just after Christmas, there seems to be a glut of them on eBay. I have a top limit of twenty pounds sterling including postage that I will pay for a sweater that retails for 70 pounds in the run-up to Christmas.

edited to add, when you can lean your sweaters up against the wall, wash them in cool water + shampoo. They are made of hair, after all. Squeeze (don't wring) and dry flat away from heat. Simple and cheap.

I heard baby shampoo is the best for Merino etc.

Merino is a very robust wool and endures so much punishment to break it down in order to accept and hold a dye that yes, good suggestion, the milder the shampoo, the better.

edited to add: poor merino, by the time it reaches you it's been through enough xD

Looking at the watch photos on Dosbods it is like scenes from American Werewolf in London, but without Jenny Agutter getting nailed in the shower.Im surprised most of the members on here buy silver.

Christchurch has always been mainly a pensioner type place, The priory is nice and worth a day visit, you can get there in 30mins from Bournemouth Etc.

I had the worst meal / service ever in a Christchurch restaurant many moons ago, its the only time in my life that I nearly came to fisticuffs in a eatery.

If you stay in Bournemouth (has a lot of nightlife, if that's your thing), then many nice places to reach from there for a day visit. Swanage, Cranbourne chase, Blackmoor Vale, New Forest, Salibury, etc etc.

@DurhamBorn interesting you go for John Smedley jumpers. My sister, mum, grandad, great grandad, ….  all worked at the factory in Derbyshire.

Amazingly the factory (Lea Mills) was founded in 1784. Basically copying the nearby Arkwright factory at nearby cromford (1771), which was the first water powered factory. Lea Mills is literally in middle of nowhere, very hilly, and was located for the reliable stream for water power. Later serviced  by cromford canal 1794.
Amazing that Lea Mills is still running and my sister still working there!! All the other textile mills/factories, that were major employers, are long gone.

If anybody is passing through Derbyshire, Arkwright’s mill and cromford canal is a nice place to visit.

I spent many a happy day around Matlock and Bakewell in my early 30s when i was seeing a woman from Killamarsh, lovely area.I love Smedley gear. Its fantastic for any age,but i think in your 40s and 50s if you keep in decent shape,ie no gut, decent arms etc then youl struggle to find better, their Merino polos are amazing.Iv got a lot from the Bobby v neck jumper right through to Sea Island cotton cardigans. The workforce are very skilled thats for sure.

I did exactly the same thing with merino jumpers! Trawled ebay for new with tags for less than 20 quid.

Liked Costco versions the best, m&s were a bit thin.

2nd the baby shampoo.

I wring the water out if them then lay them flat on the floor on a heavy towel. Stretch them as they get drier. Slow process but still look good as new.

Actually i quite like cheapo watches since i treat them like shit, so ive got quite a few seikos and orient automatics, few cheapo casios and citizens - all low budget, all filthy and some just smashed and buggered, chinese crap like pagnali design with seiko NH35 movements in them are my favorite since i dont feel bad about scratches and scrapes, invicta grey market watches are cheap and pretty accurate - again i think seiko inside - im not a value collector, its just a watch to me, got to marvel at the glass back ones and the engineering that goes on in the automatics, i didnt even wear one for 2 years cos of my slipped neck disk on the left hand side, just recently cranked a few of them up for swapping around on my left wrist to get used to them again being there.
