Mindblowing context for the scale of Fentanyl deaths in the US, raising the question of: how far along is the collapse of the US?

Without being unduly harsh, the fentanyl users are usually going to be petty criminals and those on benefits.

I have said before that there looks to be an extremely light touch by the authorities in the US and Canada with regard to fentanyl as it's solving expensive problems for them: crime, homelessness and benefits claimants.

Fentanyl is strengthening the US economy rather than weakening it by culling the unproductive.

What about if it creates problems? If someone with a job and house gets hooked on it, they might lose their job, then their home and turn to crime.

They might, as they might become addicted to online gambling and do the same.

But usually it's the last resort of the long term drug user seeking ever higher highs.

And given the utter failure of "the war on drugs", it isn't a surprise that another approach is being taken.

Fentanyl is an opioid prescribed by doctors to ease pain, for that reason it might draw non junkies into getting addicted to it. Then they are on the slippery slope down to joining the long term junkies. Don't let the NHS prescribe you any!

Its data showed that homeowner mortgages in arrears increased by 7% to 93,680 compared to the previous quarter.

Buy-to-let (BTL) mortgages, also adjudged to be more than 2.5% behind the outstanding balance of the loan, rose by 18%.

So much for IO BT being 'less riksing than OO ...'

Let the great IO BTL SVR repricing begin!

German house prices fall at the fastest annual pace in 60 years

Martin Arnold in Frankfurt

German house prices fell at the fastest annual pace in 60 years in 2023, according to data released on Thursday, but the decline seemed to stabilise in the fourth quarter, raising hopes of a potential rebound this year.

The German Real Estate Index, which tracks property sales across the country, found the price of single-family homes fell 11.3 per cent in the fourth quarter from a year ago, while the price of apartments dropped 8.9 per cent and multi-family homes were down 20.1 per cent.

There were smaller declines in the fourth quarter after some banks lowered their mortgage rates. “It might be that we are seeing the beginning of a stabilisation in real estate prices,” said Moritz Schularick, president of the Kiel Institute, adding mortgages “should become cheaper again, thereby stimulating demand.”

Here on Anglesey I know someone who has completed on a house this week for £325k. Last sold for £240k late 2020. It had no structural changes, just a bit of tarting down. Her first job before moving in, is to redecorate it all.

Latest RICS market survey.

One of the agent comments for @sancho panza, it doesn't say how many sales though.

James Mckillop, MRICS, Savills, [email protected],
Salisbury - We agreed nearly £30m of sales in Q4 last year and
the run of sales has continued into January. It is the prime market
which is driving sales here,
the average sale price for sales agreed
since October is £2.001m.

Well average sale of 2m, 30m in Q4 - 15, 5 a month, ~1 a week.

He aint going to be able to run a plummy office and pay salaries on that commission - higher the sales price, lowe the commission.

I make that 5 houses.

30M/2M = 15, less 10 because they are lying c**ts.
