Not sure where to post this but figured here would be good enough. If people (especially with double-barrelled surnames) are thinking like this, god help us: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/15/generous-pensions-britain-triple-lock-working-age-benefits

They haven’t the first clue have they. Keep increasing the tax take from the working so that shazza and gary and abdul and mohammed can sit on their arses all day.

Actually what we need is a new political movement/shake-up that removes the existing political class. They can choose to change course - or the starving masses will remove them from the political scene (or the gene pool) - permanently.

Agree but the sheep keep voting them in.  This doesn’t end without violent conflict.

First we have the total collapse of the system involved. There is no escape.

After that, the violent conflict.

Government backpeddles on more ideological vanity projects as it realises its broke, the country is broke and the infrastructure is going to be.

Mandated Heat Pumps - on hold

Mandated EV's on hold

Banning Gas Central Heating - on hold

Offshore Wind Auction - Failed (UK can't afford the price)

7 Bins Proposal - Scrapped

Flight Taxes - Scrapped

Interest rates tomorrow (yanks are anticipated to raise theirs).

Mrs F had to order a load more of our boxes for work today. They are a custom size and usually take a few days to produce.

She ordered at noon and got notification at 5pm that they had been despatched.

This is the sort of coalface info that is very telling.

Seeing similar things. Bought some emulsion paint online yesterday afternoon. It was delivered lunch time today.

Ordered some insulated plasterboard the week before. Was expecting it within 4 or 5 days. Arrived the next morning, less than 24 hours after ordering and on an empty lorry. Bit of a pain really as we then had to store it for a few extra days.

On a smaller scale, the local tradespeople we use (plumber, electrician, plasterers) are all very busy. One man bands though and not vat registered so perhaps they are not the best indicator. If their work dries up, then I'll be worried.

Not sure if right thread but thought this interesting re targets.

Nobody is renting office space full stop, in my area the large former new-town town office block, along with half a retail centre is being pulled down to build 900 flats that nobody will have a job to rent.

It's right next to a railway station but anyone commuting would only live there if they liked being depressed.

Regional Reit a good example of a small cap stock ( mainly office, but some retail) 64% discount to nav , 71% fall from issue price and a slightly misleading 23% dividend, as it has been cut back to 1.2p a quarter/ 4.8p a year against the 28p price. That might not hold either...and  they have to renegotiate their debt in 2024.

An interesting snippet on Newsnight tonight with Danny Kruger MP, who conceded that “the government is no longer run by the government”. Government departments now need to defer many decisions to quangos, arms-length bodies, NGOs, charities, lobby groups, etc, and ministers are now relatively powerless to enact change, even if they want to.

I know this probably won’t come as a surprise to people here - I can remember talk of a bonfire of the quangos back in circa 2004/5 - but it’s quite a stark assessment of the political machinery from an MP and an indication of how real reform will be near-on impossible, owing to how the tentacles of power have spread out over recent decades.
