3 things they should prioritise - Capacity, reliability & affordability.

When your train is cancelled and you have to get an alternative, packed, delayed train with an connection on an equally packed delayed train getting home over an hour later than you should (as I used to get when I commuted) then a cup of the cheapest coffee money can buy won't really make up for that.

The problem is the price of train tickets.

If we really want to reduce the amount of cars on the road, with a knock on effect on emissions, then taking the train needs to be cheaper and more convenient than driving.

On a tangent a bit, but it's also the perfect opportunity to make good on climate change if the gov and employers were to support home working - thousands of journeys not made every day and tons of CO2 not emitted every day. Still, that's common sense and that just won't do.

It is far too expensive to travel in the standard class at regular times. Cardiff to London should not be any more than £20. It is still cheaper than that to travel by car in petrol/electric. Throw in £10-15 for parking, still miles cheaper than the £87 I have to presently pay travelling off peak for a same day return. Make train travel very cheap & reserve the coffee as enema for your bosses.

“Put money into improving railway quality, working to decrease the number of late trains, and adding extra carriages to overcrowded trains using a small fraction of the money funnelled to the top?”

Sack 50%

Half the pay of the remaining 50%

Massive issue with UK trans.

~50% of train journeys end or start in London.

London train trips are 70% down.

The journey to work is set to be a whole lot more relaxing than before for commuters hopping back on the train.

That at least is the plan: the rail industry is offering free hot drinks, access to a mindfulness app and other perks to lure people back on board.

Reminded me of this brilliant song from back in the day

On the National Express there's a jolly hostess
Selling crisps and tea
She'll provide you with drinks and theatrical winks
For a sky-high fee
Mini-skirts were in style when she danced down the aisle
Back in '63 (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
But it's hard to get by when your arse is the size
Of a small country

I once tried to save ~£20 by NatEx from Reading to Yawk.

12h later......

Fuck that.

There are some NatEx journeys that re cheap n useful. But few n far between.

Back to 30min, Rdg Pdgton, 2h Kx to Yawk. With beers.

People can get their own breakfast. What commuters want is a seat at a price that isn't extortionate, especially compared to flying

It's also a HILARIOUS idea that someone travelling long distance would buy a train ticket which costs £120 more than travelling by car in order to save £2 on a coffee.

Here’s an idea - instead of HS2 which will marginally benefit the minority - invest in high use railway infrastructure and use efficiency savings to drive down prices and increase useage

No excuse for continuing a reduced timetable. I'm traincrew,

I'm telling you there is no staff shortage crisis, nor as there ever been one. The only crisis has been train company made decisions. It was all about saving money by not running service. The perverse thing is this. Many of the services they cut were the most popular.

If they really want to "lure commuters back", the most effective thing to do would be to make fares more affordable. Next target, make the things run to schedule.

I travel to work on the train 3 days a week. I just want a seat, some cleanliness , a bit of peace and quiet and a reliable service. No gimmicks thanks

We should have 2 tickets one for seated one for unseated. I would choose the latter as I sit on my arse all day I now stand on the train. This means I am less stressed as I do not have to elbow fellow commuters to secure a seat.

“Hey John, how do we get people back onto our trains?”

“Put money into improving railway quality, working to decrease the number of late trains, and adding extra carriages to overcrowded trains using a small fraction of the money funnelled to the top?”

“…”

“…Put money into giving people free coffee and mindfulness apps, so the problem is with them and not us?”

“PERFECT!”

Yes, a free coffee will definitely encourage me to use your slow, dirty, overcrowded, unreliable and hideously expensive trains. Marvellous.

Journeys would be more relaxing if they weren't ruined by people speaking loudly on their mobiles or streaming content on speakerphone.

Lots of people strongly disagree.

Having  free £2 cup of coffee doesnt make up for standing on a platform at 630, to get into an overcrowded train.

I’m a fan of mindfulness but not apps for it.

A personal favourite book of mine is Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabit Zinn.

A great book full of scientific study and Buddhist philosophy. Very useful for living day to day in my opinion.

The bloke is a medical doctor and favours Buddhist philosophy. Draws on science, Buddhist philosophy, wider affairs of the world we inhabit. Also, in my opinion, a lot of common sense.

Even though I fully agree that rail ticket prices are insane, some of the comments on that thread Spy gave me a good chuckle. Particularly the one about what you need is operational staff running the show. The railway is full of operational people at the top; in fact, you cannot be in train driver management without having driver experience - it is perhaps the industry with the greatest opportunity to rise from ops to management to exec and the industry is a shambles.

The railway’s fundamental issues are unionisation/protectionism, lack of commercial pressure to compete and the fact it hasn’t automated basic processes. This all passes through into ticket prices.

Yep. As I said on other threads, I see no difference between the trains now and in November 2021. They are stlll 50% empty even at peak times.

London is still mostly empty in the City.

People are not going back. Hybrid working is the norm for all now.

Asked to go down to London office this week, declined.

Refuse to give that place money whilst they have their stupid mask rule, despite ignoring masking previously, now they are going alone feel it more important to keep my money away.

At least it looks like they e finally retired the slam door carriages.

..and no graffiti?

The last slammers in the UK went out of service in 2005. Long before that in London, I think.

The old Routemaster buses and the 1938 stock tube carriages went out of service that year as well I think.

Can't say it's been for the better really. At least the Routemasters had windows that opened in hot weather!

I went in last Friday night.  Essex into Liverpool street.
Train in was rammed, standing room only.   5pm
Train out was even more rammed, cramped standing room only.  11pm
Tube, was rammed.  Although northern line was out of action, so that will have had some effect.

Going in just before Christmas, it was like a ghost town, really weird.
Now, Friday night, apart from the masked, it's almost normal.

It's getting busier in the morning on the trains. No way near what is was pre this bullshit but it seems that companies are calling back staff. March and April will give a bigger indication as it takes time to 'reconfigure' the office.

Still lots of mask wearing but definitely a fair percentage (15-25) not bothering and I don't see any enforcement on my journeys. Just the mong announcements that its all for our safety and that the railways, tubes and buses really care about us. Ahhh shucks...

It's back. By June everyone will have pretty much forgotten the nightmare of the last 2 years. Except those of us who will never forgive or forget.

This isn't my experience at all. London seems mostly empty still in the working week.

They did that before Christmas. It will only ever get to 50-60 percent of what it was before. For instance pretty much all the top companies in London are on full hybrid working with only 2 days in the office a week. These are proper, permanent employee policies now - nothing to do with Covid etc.

So obviously nothing is going to back to what it was before.
